Heather Gerrard, 19, moved to Edinburgh from Peterhead last year to start an OGTAP (Oil & Gas Technical Apprentice Programme) apprenticeship with OPITO. Heather attends Edinburgh College as part of her apprenticeship and we caught up with her about how her experience to date:
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
I always had an interest in engineering and this programme provides a great opportunity to get into the industry as well as teaching me the practical/technical skills I needed for the job.
What were you doing before starting your apprenticeship?
After school, I completed a NC in Mechanical Marine Maintenance before joining Shell’s Engineering Scheme (SES).
What has been the best thing so far about your apprenticeship? Any highlights?
The best part of the apprenticeship has definitely been the practical aspect of the course. And in terms of highlights, I’ve made great friends and have had the experience of living away from home.
If you could give one piece of advice to a student starting an apprenticeship now, what would it be?
Make the most of it.
What are your plans for the future?
The plan is to complete my HNC and become a fully qualified Instrument Technician and to make the most of any opportunities that come my way.
Looking back, is there anything you would do differently?
I would have applied to the programme sooner.
If you could describe your apprenticeship in three words, what would they be?
Appealing, enjoyable, worthwhile.
