Thirty-one-year-old Ashleigh Thorburn from Edinburgh wanted to do something for herself again, so decided to return to College in search of a career change. She tells us about her experience.
“I attended college to study HNC Beauty when I was 16, before going on to work in the industry for a number of years. After having a number of jobs, I started a family and decided to give up working when my youngest was born so that I could spend more time with my two kids.
Coming back to education was a daunting thought at first as I wasn’t sure how I would cope with the workload and the assessments, but when my youngest child started nursery, I decided that it was time to do something for me again and applied to study the NC level 5 Business course.
I run a tight schedule every morning so I can get the kids off to school and nursery, before getting to college on time. I love the routine and have really enjoyed the challenge – there’s no better satisfaction than when you study hard and pass assessments first time on subjects that you would’ve previously thought you’d be terrible at. I love learning new skills, and despite feeling initially apprehensive, I’m so glad I decided to come to College.
I’ve found the course very interesting, and it has opened my eyes to things happening in the real world. Before, I lived day-to-day looking after my kids, but now I’m able to look at things in a wider context and consider the implications.
Next year I’m hoping to progress onto HND Business before going on to university. I have big goals and I’m looking forward to continuing on this path to create more opportunities for a brighter future for me and my kids.”
