A pair of Edinburgh College students have been named in the top three breakthrough marketing stars of the year in a national industry competition.
HND Graphic Design students Ida Bukantyte and Marta Winogrodzka have been announced as finalists in the Breakthrough Award category at this year’s Data and Marketing Association (DMA) Awards which takes place in London on Tuesday 3 December.
Each year university and college students, interns and non-professionals battle it out for the chance to impress some of the biggest names in marketing by working on a live creative brief, for a real client or business. The winner is awarded a cash prize of £1,000, second place will win £500 and third will get £250.
This year’s brief was to develop a multi-channel campaign that will build awareness and excitement, driving pet owners to purchase Direct Line’s pet insurance.
Ida, Marta, and the Edinburgh Napier University team of Jack Brodie and Brodie Childs will present their submission to a panel of industry experts next week before finding out who will take home the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards at the ceremony.
Ida said: “I am very excited to be shortlisted for the DMA Breakthrough Award, I was surprised to be one of the finalists. I am thrilled to present my concept to the judges’ panel in London. It is a great experience to work on a live project and also to pitch directly for the client. I am looking forward to attending the awards and meeting people from all the different design agencies.”
Marta said: “It feels great to be shortlisted for this award, I’m really flattered and wasn’t expecting it at all. I think it’s an amazing opportunity for students to present their ideas to a real client. I’ve already received some valuable feedback from the judges and I’m really looking forward to meeting them in person. I may be a bit stressed, but I’m mostly excited.”
Graphic Design lecturer Helena Good said: “Ida and Marta are both fantastic students and fully deserve to be named finalists in this competition. I would like to wish them the best of luck when they both go to present their ideas in front of the panel – I’m sure they will do us all proud. The duo join a long list of Edinburgh College students to be recognised by the DMA Awards, which is testament to the depth of talent studying here.”
