Edinburgh College design student scoops silver award in national industry competition

An Edinburgh College Graphic Design student has been recognised as one of the breakthrough marketing stars of the year in a national industry competition.

HND Visual Communication: Graphic Design student Lena Sakura was presented with the silver Breakthrough Award at the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) annual award ceremony. The award showcases the best creative talent from undergraduate advertising, design and marketing students in the UK.

Latvian-born Lena was selected to present her entry for this year’s award to a panel of industry experts in London and impressed with her multi-channel advertising campaign pitch for Barclaycard’s range of contactless ways to pay.

Lena follows in the footsteps of former Edinburgh College Design students Ayesha Islam, Jennifer Grieve and Sam Haynes, whose design work has been recognised by the DMA in previous years.

Thirty-five-year-old Lena moved to Scotland in 2007 and previously worked in factories before choosing to study Graphic Design at Edinburgh College.

She said: “Presenting my work in front of the panel in London was a really exciting experience. I worked hard to be as prepared as I could be and had a lot of support from my lecturers, mentors and fellow students. I never thought I’d have an opportunity to do something like that and really enjoyed getting positive feedback from the panellists.

“Attending the awards ceremony is something I will remember for the rest of my life. It was a great reward for all the hard work I’ve done and an experience which I am very thankful for. Thanks to the DMA Breakthrough Award for giving me such special memories, the award now has a special place on my shelf at home.”

Edinburgh College Graphic Design lecturer Helena Good said: “Lena is a fantastic student and fully deserves the recognition from the DMA. She did a fantastic job in meeting the brief set by the client and wowed the panel with her creative concept. As a result of her entry for the award, Lena has been offered a placement with a top design agency in London which I hope will be a helpful stepping-stone to her career in design.”
