Edinburgh College students help tell the stories of Midlothian and Borders

A group of Edinburgh College students recently took part in a project to help tell the stories of Midlothian and the Borders through an interactive app.

HNC Radio Broadcasting students recorded storytellers telling the tales of Midlothian and the Borders which will then be used as part of a series of driving, walking and rail journeys throughout the area. The stories will be hosted on the Whereverly platform created for the Midlothian and Borders Tourism Action Group.

Whereverly work in partnership with tourism groups, communities and further education institutions to create digital apps that will help showcase the rich heritage of the communities and to boost tourism.

Student Mitch Stevenson said: “This has been a very innovative project to be involved in and it’s provided an excellent opportunity to meet with people who have experience working in the broadcasting industry. I’ve also really enjoyed learning and developing new skills which will help me progress in my course.”

Design Media lecturer Conor Wright said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for the students to work on a real world brief.  They had to produce broadcast-quality content and got to work with other industry professionals.  The pressure was on them but they have responded in an amazing manner and now have great content for the CVs. It also shows the range of audio jobs that are out there and how the College can prepare the students to be ready to grasp those opportunities.”

Managing director of Whereverly Iain McNeill said: “We were delighted to work with Edinburgh College students in the recording and production of audio for the Midlothian and Borders app.  The students have been thoroughly professional and a pleasure to work with. The storytellers were made very welcome and supported through the whole experience. It’s really exciting to see the calibre of graduates who will be entering the future job marketplace. We look forward to inviting our Edinburgh College audio team to the official launches of the app in March.”
