Edinburgh College apprentice Stefano La Greca will enter a spraycan shootout with some of the UK’s top trainee painters in the final of the national Bodyshop Magazine Awards this week.
Stefano, a Vehicle Painting apprentice at the college, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Paint Apprentice of the Year category along with another four candidates. He will find out the result at the awards ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole in Birmingham on 29 September.
Stefano, who works for DSL Autos, qualified for the final after competing against fellow apprentices from across the UK at a competition event in London.
Stefano said: “When Jim (Stefano’s lecturer) asked if I was happy if he entered me for the competition I initially didn’t think much of it as I had nothing to lose really from the first test which was multiple choice. I sat the test I didn’t hear back for a few weeks and really didn’t know if I had made the cut. It only really sank in when I got an email back telling me that I finished top six out of other apprentices across the country and they wanted me to come down to Thatcham to do a practical test.
Once the practical test was over with I wasn’t feeling too confident again but I tried my best and it was a good experience and after a few weeks again I got an email to say I finished in a top four. Overall I’m very happy with how far I’ve came and I’m glad there are things like this for apprentices since it inspires you to be as good as you can be and put full effort into it.”
Jim McCann, an Automotive Engineering lecturer at Edinburgh College, has worked with Stefano over the course of his apprenticeship.
Jim said: “Stefano is an extremely enthusiastic student who is always keen to help others. He maintained a very high standard of workmanship during the practical assessments, and demonstrated excellent knowledge and commitment throughout the course. It was the high standards demonstrated whilst studying at the college and in his workplace that led to his shortlisting and we couldn’t be prouder of his achievements thus far. Hopefully he does well at the awards and we wish him the best of luck.”
