Portraits from the creative community

An Edinburgh College Photography graduate, Alan McCredie, is launching his new exhibition, [Unstaged], documenting some of the well-known faces in the creative community in Scotland.

[Unstaged] is a collection of images from a long-term project begun in 2007 and features actors, writers and directors who work in Scottish theatre, film and TV. Alan’s exhibition features Mark Rylance, Dawn Steele, Maureen Beattie, Eileen McCallum, Val McDermid and Stephen Greenhorn among others.

Alan said: “I wanted to show the huge number of people who are involved in this well-loved but often chronically underfunded industry and to place them firmly in the spotlight, where they all belong. After I left university I worked for a few years in a Scottish theatrical agency and made many friends in the business. I am fascinated by the craft and hard work that goes into creating theatre and TV and wanted to show some of the people involved in bringing it all together.

“It will be the first time any of these images have been exhibited publicly and although the images are only a small representation of what will eventually be a larger travelling exhibition and book, they are representative of the collection as a whole.”

Madeleine Brown, the Edinburgh College Creative Exchange gallery curator said: “Creative Exchange is one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful gallery spaces and we have built up a strong exhibition programme, featuring the work of our talented photography, illustration, graphic design and textiles students. Alan’s exhibition is part of our recently launched programme of collaboration with successful artists and photographers who can bring new and exciting work to the Creative Exchange gallery space. Alan’s exhibition is a must-see for anyone with an interest in the performing arts sector in Scotland.”

The exhibition opens at 6pm on Friday 20 January and runs until 17 February. It is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm at the Creative Exchange (29 Constitution Street, EH6 7BS). Admission is free.
