When dad of three Scott had to leave his job as a field service technician due to an injury which meant he could no longer fulfil the role he had held for six years, he decided Edinburgh College was the place to help him gain the qualifications he needed for a change of career.
“Returning to education with three children under 10 years old and a mortgage seemed crazy yet, it was the best option I had. I left school with average qualifications and didn’t have much to fall back on when my injury meant I couldn’t continue to do manual work.
I wanted to study more after school but never had the confidence to do it. As part of my role as a field service technician I often worked with people, going into homes to fix things and interacting with the residents, as well as providing training for my colleagues. I knew I wanted to do something which involved people and so the HND Human Resource Management course seemed a natural fit.
The first of my three years at College was challenging for me and my family but we found a good balance and routine and gradually the light at the end of the tunnel got brighter. Each small success at College motivated me to continue to work harder.
It was great to study alongside people of all different ages and backgrounds and to learn from each other. The lecturers managed to deliver a course which suited everybody and made it easy and enjoyable to learn. It created a cohesive team-like environment in which I made many friends. My only regret is not doing it sooner!
My College experience has taught me that I’m capable of a lot more than I ever thought possible and that is something I will pass on to my daughters – inviting them along to watch me graduate was a definite highlight.
The course has enabled me to change careers at a point in life where I didn’t think it would be possible. I’m now working as a HR Assistant and I’m hoping to go on to further studies to progress up the career ladder.”
