A group of 12 Edinburgh College NC Graphic Design and HND Visual Communication Graphic Design students joined 30 primary and secondary school children at a workshop to design the logo and website for the Year of Young People 2018.
The initiative is a joint project between the Scottish Government, Young Scot and The Gate agency.
The Year of Young People is the Scottish Government’s chosen theme for 2018 and is dedicated to inspiring Scotland through its young people, celebrating achievements, valuing contribution to communities and creating new opportunities for young people to shine locally, nationally and globally.
Two students worked with each group of six/seven children to help them come up with ideas. The pupils had to come up with a brand look and feel for the YOYP, taking into consideration the target audience for the brand and the colours, shapes, and fonts that should be used. The groups presented their ideas at the end and everyone took a vote on the favourite logo.
Helena Good, Graphic Design lecturer at Edinburgh College, said: “It was a great event for Edinburgh College to be involved in. Our students were able to work alongside the representatives from Young Scot, offering their creative guidance and support and working with them to bring their ideas to life. It’s a real confidence boost for the students to be able to impart their knowledge onto others. The winning students will now take part in a work placement at the Gate Interactive.
The final logo will be presented to the Scottish Government for approval. Both the logo and the website are due to launch on 7 March 2017.
Pupils were invited to stay involved in the development of the logo and website by signing up at the end of the event.
