Edinburgh College students to take part in weekend of fashion in the capital

Students, staff and members of the public are invited to attend a free weekend of fashion when a group of Edinburgh College students take to the catwalk to showcase their own designs.

UAL Fashion and Textiles Level 3 Diploma and HND Fashion and Textile Design students will take part in a fashion show, exhibiting pieces of clothing and accessories they have created as part of their course, at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh from 10am – 5pm on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 of February 2019.

The students have taken inspiration from the paintings and themes shown in the Edwin G Lucas exhibition which they studied as part of their course. The students have also had access to a digital print accessories range, which has been supported by the Edinburgh College Development Trust.

Student Kim Oliver: “This has been a really interesting project to work on. We had a guided tour of Edwin Lucas: An Individual Eye at the City Art Centre, to introduce us to the work of this local artist who produced an amazing variety of work, including surrealist cityscapes of Edinburgh.”

“Using Lucas’ rich and vivid palette as a starting point, we designed oversized bags decorated with architectural prints in tribute to this versatile painter – whose work has only recently been recognised and exhibited alongside artists such as Picasso, Cezanne, Hockney and Paolozzi.”

“We are now working on our tops to complement the bags, and are enjoying the opportunity to continue the Lucas theme. It’s a huge honour to be invited to produce work related to such a prestigious artist and it will be amazing to have our fashion show alongside his work at the City Art Centre”.

Textiles Lecturer Kim Gunn said: “The fashion show really inspires our students to excel and be inspired by visual art and get experience in producing high quality work. The students have been working very hard over the last few weeks planning their designs and putting them together and they can’t wait to show them off!”
