“I thought Scottish women’s football on TV was many years away”

Edinburgh College Sport and Fitness Lecturer, Becky Galbraith featured live on BBC Alba for Scottish Women’s Premier League team, Spartans Ladies, in their league game against Glasgow City recently.

The historic match was one of the first Scottish Women’s Premier League games to be shown live on TV. BBC Alba announced in September 2018 it would broadcast four SWPL1 games for the remainder of the 2018 season and also agreed a new two-year deal for six games per year including the Scottish Women’s Cup final and Scottish Women’s Premier League Cup final. The announcement comes off the back of a hugely successful year for the Scottish Women’s national team who reached the 2019 World Cup finals in France next June.

Becky said: “This match is historic. It is a move in the right direction for the women’s game, and something I never thought I would ever be involved in as a player. I thought Scottish women’s football on television was many years away, or not possible at all. It raises the profile of the women’s game, but most importantly gives recognition to the hard work on and off the pitch from the players, coaches and clubs.”

“We need to follow examples made by the Super League (English Women’s Football League) and other women’s leagues around the world, which will give future generations opportunities to achieve careers in football. My role models were always male players, but we want to create female role models for young girls to aspire to.”

Based at the College’s Milton Road Campus, Becky has been working full-time for the College’s Sport and Fitness team for the past four years as well as playing football. Becky has played football for over 20 years since she first started playing for her local boys football team while in Primary 2, due to there being no local girl teams. The striker recently re-signed for Spartans Ladies this summer after leaving in 2012 to play for Hutchison Vale LFC, followed by Stirling University WFC.

Becky scored the second goal for Spartans as they were defeated 4-2 by Glasgow City, when the match took place at Petershill Park, Glasgow on Sunday 28 October.
