Three Edinburgh College Stonemasonry students – Hamish Innes, Robbie McDermott and Calum Munro – recently competed in the northern UK heat of the 11th UK Masonry Skills Challenge.
Organised by Stone Federation Great Britain, the challenge is open to teams of three apprentices from each stonemasonry college in the UK. Hamish, Robbie and Calum were up against 24 apprentice masons from eight other colleges across England and Scotland including City of Glasgow College, Forth Valley College, Elgin Conservation Centre and York College.
The competitors had to complete a specific project in an agreed time. Using a drawing, a piece of stone and the material necessary for making moulds and templates, the stone had to be worked with a traditional mallet and chisel with no technical tools allowed.
The team are now eagerly awaiting to find out if they have been named winners of the competition with the results expected in the next week.
